Jokulsarlagoon – A long day tour from our guesthouse.
The day tour from Guesthouse Lambastadir to the lagoon Jokulsarlon is a long day tour which offers a magnificent and diverse experience of Icelandic nature. The black sand beaches, the ocean and the coastline, the glaciers, the birdlife and the nation´s history are just examples of what you will experience during this tour. You begin the day by driving towards east and throughout the historical area Rangarvallasysla, the setting of the medieval saga Njalssaga. You should stop at Hvolsvollur for a while and then drive to Seljalandsfoss, a beautiful, high waterfall you can walk behind. From there you continue the trip to Skogar, where there is another big waterfall, Skogafoss. From Skogafoss you drive to Vik in Myrdal where you can visit a souvenir shop, which specializes in woolen clothes. Now you drive to Kirkjubaejarklaustur and then further east and over the glacier river Skeidara. The highest peak in Iceland, Oraefajokull is there dominating the nature and from there we drive to the glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon. Jokulsarlon (literally “glacial river lagoon”) is a large glacial lagoon in southeast Iceland, on the borders of Vatnajokull National Park. Situated at the head of Breidamerkurjokull, it evolved into a lagoon after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the Icelandic glaciers. The lagoon now stands 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) away from the ocean’s edge and recently became the deepest lake in Iceland at over 248 metres (814 ft) depth as glacial retreat extended its boundaries. The size of the lagoon has increased fourfold since the 1970s. It is considered as one of the natural wonders of Iceland. Jokulsarlon has been a setting for four Hollywood movies — A View to a Kill, Die Another Day, Tomb Raider and Batman Begins — in addition to the reality-TV series Amazing Race. After ca. one hour stop you return back via the same route. During summer there is a boat tour company operating on the lagoon and the tour takes 1 – 2 hours.
